CORE announce news coverage ahead of 2026 Election Series
With Wales heading to the polls on Thursday 7 May 2026, CORE Teledu is launching a major slate of programming designed to inform and empower young voters. All coverage will be available on YouTube (@CORE‑Teledu).
“CORE Election 2026 – Politics Explained”
6×15’ + 1×15’ special
In the run‑up to polling day, CORE will release a seven‑part explainer series covering Wales’ six major political parties — Plaid Cymru, Welsh Labour, the Welsh Conservatives, the Welsh Liberal Democrats, the Wales Green Party, and Reform UK Wales — with an additional episode focusing on the SNP. Each episode will explore party histories, policy positions, and how Wales’ democratic process works under the new fully proportional electoral system.
“CORE Election 2026 – The Debate”
Live on Tuesday 5 May – 60’
Produced in partnership with the Mock Election Team, this youth‑led debate will feature young representatives from the six major Welsh parties. Participants will discuss devolved and non‑devolved issues and take questions from an audience of young people from the Caerdydd Fynnon Taf and Caerdydd Penarth constituencies.
“CORE Election 2026 – The Results Live”
Friday 7 May – 08:30–09:45 (75’)
CORE will provide live coverage of the overnight counts, exit polls, and the first declarations. A second live programme at 17:00 will be broadcast if required, depending on the pace of results.
Rolling Coverage & Analysis
Across Thursday 6 May and Friday 7 May, CORE News will run a live blog on 24LiveBlog, offering real‑time updates, constituency‑level developments, and analysis as results emerge. If the election does not produce a clear outcome, CORE News will continue to provide updates on coalition discussions.
Given that the election is likely to not produce a definitive result, CORE News will provide regular updates regarding coalition talks.
State Opening Special
CORE will also produce a special live programme for the State Opening of the Senedd (date TBC), where HM King Charles III is expected to continue the tradition of opening the devolved legislature in person.
Hayden Watkins, Leader of CORE, said:
“This Senedd election, the first under a fully proportional electoral system, is likely to yield a historic result. We feel it is important to highlight Wales’ six major parties — Plaid Cymru, Welsh Labour, the Welsh Conservatives, the Welsh Liberal Democrats, the Wales Green Party and Reform UK Wales — as well as the SNP, who form Britain’s seventh major party, for a young audience, many of whom will be able to vote for the first time this year.”
